Yes, they are actual diamonds. Two, very small (less than 1 carat together) brilliant-cut diamonds. And before anyone suggests it, I haven't stolen them from university. I bought a cheap ring with diamonds in it and cut them out (massacring the ring) with a pair of hefty metal snips.
A red Marabou feather with droplets of water and diamonds. Not much else to it really  Done with a Canon EFS 60mm f/2.8 macro usm lens.
